28 | Be Steady

Happy Tuesday!

I've always felt like Tuesday is a bit like the neglected stepchild of the week. Mondays are notoriously awful, but at least they have a recognizable reputation.  Wednesdays are Hump Days. Thursdays are almost-the-weekend excitement builders.  We "Thank God for Fridays."  (Really, aren't we thanking God for every day we get?).  Saturdays we celebrate for the opportunity to play, and Sunday is our blessed day of rest.

Feeling sorry for Tuesdays, I started celebrating them when I was teaching high school English.  By "celebrating" I mean welcoming students with a cheery "Happy Tuesday!" and a high five as they entered my classroom.  They thought I was weird. (They were right.)  It didn't catch on.

But I didn't give up.  While I may not have changed Tuesdays into days of joy and jubilation, it certainly put me in a good mood.  Sometimes that's all we need to do a world of good in our little corner of the world.

What does all this have to do with taking time to be still?

It is my prayer that we don't give up this time to be still with our Lord.  May God ensure that it catches on in our lives and does a world of good in our faith journeys.

We are 28 days into this stillness series, and you're probably realizing: 1) It's not easy to be still on a daily basis, and 2) When you can find time to be still, it's a worthwhile investment.

With Day 31 on the horizon, let me give you a little encouragement for holding on to this habit of stopping and soaking up God's presence.  Let's be steady in pursuing God's stillness, well beyond October, into the gratitude of November and the celebration of December and the resolutions of January.

There are going to be things that will knock us off this straight and narrow path of quietly, slowly talking with and listening to God.  Busy days.  Sick days.  Days of travel.  Days of neglect.  Days with joy so full we forget we need our God.  Days with despair so deep we feel distant from God.

Knowing we are imperfect, knowing we don't have to do this perfectly, knowing God's grace is sufficient to make this habit holy and whole, let us patiently pledge to make our best effort to meet with our Savior every day.

quote22.com
Because days that harbor pockets of God's peace are a key piece in keeping our sanity, tending to our resilience, and nurturing our faith.  And with our steady persistence, with God's divine intervention, we will find it easier and easier to discover these pockets of peace.

One step at a time.

What is your first step going to be?

I've got news for you.  You've already taken your first step.  You are here today, devoting time to thinking about your relationship with God.  You are contemplating how you can be still in his presence.  Whether this is your first time stopping by or your 28th visit, you are on the right track.

What is your next step going to be?

Stop back tomorrow.  I'll have another post for you Wednesday, and Thursday, and Friday. After October, my aim is to post twice a week.  (Will you say a quick prayer for me that I can deliver?)

Or if you don't stop here (I am weird, after all), stop somewhere with God and your Bible and a prayer.  Keep it simple.  God will meet you wherever you are.

And after that?

Pledge to persevere.  Maybe you dig the daily devotion.  Maybe weekly is more your thing.  Maybe two or three times a week is what you can manage.  Pray about your time of sweet stillness with God.  Ask him to help you discern whether it is better to start with a doable goal to build momentum, or if you need to serious challenge to kick your faith up a notch.  As for me, I'm pledging for truly daily devotions and stillness.  I've held this as a loose-y goose-y goal for too long now.  It's time to be steady in my followthrough.

Whatever you decide about the frequency, make a specific plan to Be Still with God. Put it in your calendar.  But beware of the abbreviation: BS w/ G.  Unless that puts a smile on your face and makes for a Happy Tuesday.  Then go for it.  As I've said before, I'm convinced God has a sense of humor.

After that, it's time to take action and see what God does in your quiet time.  I love how this bit of inspiration from Hazelden Publishing's book Twenty Four Hours a Day describes the transformation like water against stone.
Spiritual development is achieved by daily persistence in living the way you believe God wants you to live. Like the wearing away of a stone by steady drops of water, so will your daily persistence wear away all the difficulties and gain spiritual success for you... God will help and strengthen you, as long as you are trying to do His will.
Being still, stopping all the doing to rest and rejuvenate in God, leads to spiritual development.  (If only physical development worked like that!)  Steady drop by steady drop of drinking up God's word will quench our thirst and help our roots grow deep.  It will wear away the rocky, stony places in our lives.  Steady persistence in being still and knowing God allows us unfettered access to his strength and peace. I don't know about you, but I can use all the strength and peace I can get!
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.  1 Corinthians 15:58
Let's give ourselves fully to this work of focusing on our Lord's word and will and way.  Life's storms and distractions will try to push us off our peaceful path. But when things try to move us, we can pray to God to help us to stand steady and firm. Every effort we make to this end will be rewarded in full in our relationship with our Heavenly Creator.

And if you ever doubt or despair you ability to be steady in your devotion to God, remember that you can do hard things, because you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).

Lord,

As I have traveled down this path of being still with you this month, it is all the more clear to me that I need your stillness.  Your peace and grace sustain me and uplift me.  The more time I spend with you, the more serene I feel.  The more you bless me, the more I can a blessing to others.

As these 31 Days to Be Still wind down, help me to reflect on how to best stay steady and on track in making time for you.  Show me the spaces in my days where we can be together in faith — both the doable, easy opportunities and the challenging points where I will most benefit from our quiet time.  Lead me in building this habit even further, so that I may continue to grow in your love.

In the weeks to come, I ask for your strength and steadfastness.  On my own I'm prone to wander.  Bind my wandering heart to you, Lord.  When I'm distracted or lazy, nudge me gently and push me persistently into eager anticipation of sitting at your feet, soaking up your goodness and your glory.  I pray that this daily habit continues and grows.  I pray that being still in your presence is as necessary and automatic for me as sleeping, eating, and breathing.  You are my blessed sustenance, and for that I am so very grateful.

Amen.

19 | Be Joyful

A weekend full of goodness is winding down slow and satisfied. Four days of play, away from work and school, is good for my family's collective soul. We have been taking a break from busy and bustling from here to there, from dividing and conquering and dividing again.

When we are busy we have little time to breathe, connect, reflect, or respond in either our situations or our relationships.  Instead we react: with anxiety, frustration, disappointment, or dogged determination.

There is little room in the equation for the slower response of joy.

This weekend we practiced balancing the family equation.  We were deliberate in going slow and weighing choices.  We practiced being. And in so doing, we found ourselves finding joy in the negotiations and compromises and giggles of our collective love.

Note that word choice: finding joy. It takes some searching, some choosing to work for joy.  And see where we discovered it: not in the squealing bliss of alpine slides or the scrumptious delight of ice cream treats. Our joy this weekend was sandwiched between layers of negotiations and compromises, squabbles and stern looks, whining and chastising.  Layers of work, along with layers of pleasure. It's not easy to be a parent. It can be difficult to be a kid. It's tiring to pack and travel and fill up on fun. But in the gluey, sticky love that binds us together, we choose joy; we find joy.

Joy is not an accidental, fleeting happy moment. It's that carved out space of cherishing gifts and recognizing all their funky angles and sharp corners, and loving them all the more for that.

Today we are going to create a place to be still, to carve out some space to choose joy.

Sit cozily. Breathe slowly. Pray earnestly with me.

Lord,

You have paved the way to joy with your love. Thank you for your clear direction: when I love you — and when I love others as I love you and myself — I will love my way into your joy. I will love my way into completeness. Fullness. JoyFULLness.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." John 15:9-11

Help me to live out your command to love. I rely on your help and your grace to make my joy complete. Show me how to slow out of the rush, making it possible to rest and remain in your love, to radiate and reflect your love, even when this world tugs me in the opposite direction.

Remind me that joy dwells in the simple and the misunderstood moments, as well as the pleasing moments.  You have a plan that is bigger and brighter than all the daily details. Hiccups in the here and now will work out in the long run.

“Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life; the quiet confidence that ultimately everything will be alright, and the determined choice to praise God in all things.”
Kay Warren

Lord, your goodness is never far from me.  Just as you made the heavens, you made so much beauty here on earth. But you weren't content with merely creating beautiful scenery and creatures in this world.  You continually imbue us with your love, you eternally invite us into your joy.  And you never stop inspiring love in our relationships with our families, friends, and neighbors.

...the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.   1 Chronicles 16:26-27
Lord, there are times when joy eludes me. Help me to keep my faith strong and my focus on you in these times. Remind me of Paul and Barnabas and the disciples, shaking off the frustration and pain of persecution, finding joy in spreading your word and your love. I pray that when I run low on joy your Holy Spirit will fill me and complete me and replenish my joyful reserves.
But the Jewish leaders... stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas. So they shook the dust off their feet... And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.  Acts 13:50-52
When I can't find the joy in a particular moment, a particular day, show me your long range plan. Remind me that you have wonderful joy in store for me up ahead. Help me to truly trust in your promise to grant me lasting, soul-filling happiness and to make my joy complete. Help me to keep choosing joy as a natural extension of my faith in you.

Amen

13 | Be Love

What happens when we fill up on God's love?

We overflow.

Thankfully, it's not the toilet-running-over, QUICK-run-for-the-PLUNGER!! overflow. Nor is it the #coffeegroundsinmycuppajoe #couldthismondaygetanyworse variety.

When God's love fills us up to overflowing, it's a radiant, let-your-light-shine feeling of fine and dandy.  It's bursting with sunbeams and fuzzy puppies and squeezy hugs.

cakeandcotton.blogspot.com

It's a "This God-given life is so good I've got to share it" kind of kindness contagion.

When we make time to drink up God's love, when we soak up all the goodness tucked into the corners of our days, we can become God's love in the world.

Hopefully after yesterday's post (a love letter from God) you are sensing God's love.

Maybe it feels a bit like this...

And now that you're thinking about God's love, feeling all tingly and radiant, hopefully you are ready to go out into the world and spread it.

Wait a minute!  This is supposed to be a time to sit and be still, not run (or walk) out and do stuff.

Oh, yes.  That's right.

So... Let's be still and ask God to establish in us a mindset that will empower us to be God's love in the world as we go about our daily business.

Lord,

You have filled me up to the point of overflowing with your love.  As I spill your gentleness forth on those people you have placed in my midst, I trust in the amazing truth that your love never runs dry.  Thank you for this endless supply of your love. Help me to be generous in sharing that love with others.

I confess that sometimes I am reluctant to extend love.  I might feel threadbare and used up.  I might be holding a grudge or harboring anger.  I might have suspicions and doubts about how loving others makes me vulnerable.  Where I feel reluctance, please reveal my hangups.  Where I am slow to love, please speed up your healing in my heart.  Make me an instrument of your peace and a bearer of your blessings.

Sometimes I turn being your love in the world into a list of "To Do"s.  Lord, please throw a big ol' stop sign in my path when that happens.  Help me to make a U-turn. Guide me toward the mindset that being your love — serving as your hands and feet and eyes and ears and heart — is a privilege, not a chore.

Sometimes times I look far and wide for difficult, challenging cases that need your care.  I forget that you specifically put people in my daily path to receive and return my love.  As I quiet my voice, help me to see who needs my love today.  Write their names on my heart.  Write their needs into my prayers.

theredsojourner.tumblr.com
Lord, help me to see where my passions and talents meet other peoples' needs. Show me how I can use the gifts you have granted me in a way that blesses others. And as I joyfully do the things I love, help me to focus on glorifying you and sharing your love with the world.

As I pour out your love, I am in awe of how caring for others helps me to see them through your eyes, and how it brings me to a better understanding of how you love. I rejoice in the knowledge that loving others brings me closer to you.

Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit working in me, leading me in your loving kindness.  Thank you for encouraging and sustaining me in this time of stillness, so that I can go forth and be myself, be your love, and simply be.

Amen

Inspired to spread some love?  I'm loooooooving these ideas.
